Project ideas (in no particular order)
- DocSouth has a problem with this bug. Write a script to translate all of the entity references to character references. Alternatively, you could write a patch for the bug...
The Colonial and State Records (CSR) project has a need for work to be done on merging (meta)data from an Access db into TEI XML files.
- The CSR project also needs some more research-oriented work to be done on discovering and exploiting relationships between documents based on the indexes for the volumes. This would include figuring out what to do with pages that contain multiple documents and seeing whether there is any way to disambiguate index entries so that they point at document+page. (Brian Johnson & Barrett Keziah)
- Develop a METS profile for DocSouth objects (these are TEI files with associated images, derivative HTML, and sometimes audio).
- DocSouth is investigating XForms as a means to do internal data entry. Research on and/or implementation of a basic XForms-based data-editing system might be a good project. (I'm interested in doing this project - Mary Samouelian)
- Create an interactive content management system for a diary encoded in TEI. This will use an XML database and XQUERY/FLWOR to generate content (i.e. a user can click on a date and see the entry in the diary from that date). - Grant Dickie, Jens Westernhagen
- Create a website based on xml data sources; the site would describe education opportunities available to UNC-CH employees and their families (L. Crowley, Todd Venie).
- Create a dynamically generated RSS feed of newly added collections for ibiblio.org (Sarah Kahn- unfortunately, I think this is a one-person project) (Raymond Carney- sorry, didn't know we each could not do our own project. I will do another one.)
- update help.unc.edu DocBook documents to latest version - Doug Whitfield (I'm not sure why someone erased this earlier - see history)
- Create an application to convert geographic data into KML. (Andy Hull)
- Using eXist, develop an XML database for exploring NC gristmills, including historic information and recipes. Transform into a web presence using XQuery. Maybe experiment with XForms for data entry. (Adrienne MacKay, Jennifer Joyner)
- Using SAX to parse an annotation XML file and developing a Java GUI to filter the parsing results (Jie Jin, Peiwen Zhu)
